Although I picked up two little bits from Beauty Bay right at the start of the month and then a couple more things when the NYX stand opened at my local Boots store, it didn't seem enough for a post.
But then, I was lucky enough to win a competition on Twitter from Leah of Devoted to Pink and suddenly I had enough goodies for this post! So here is my August beauty haul...
So I promised you all a peek into the fabulous goodie bag we all received from the recent East Mids Blog Meet. I was so excited to get such a beautiful gift bag. I didn't peek until the day after the event, and it cheered me up so much after a tough week.
I never take things like that for granted, and I know it must have taken a lot of hard work to organise.
To me, blog events are all about connecting with like-minded people so to get presents on top is very much the icing on the cake. Let's take a look...
When they first became a 'thing' I couldn't get enough of the miniature beauty treats popping through my letterbox each month.
But then products got repeated, the excitement went, and I began to realise I wasn't really using anything. So I cancelled all my subs.
Somehow, I've ended up re-subscribed to both Birchbox and Glossybox. I've had a couple of Birchboxes that have been lovely, and so I was tempted to sign back up to Glossybox as well when I saw they were offering a Rae Feather makeup bag.
This is my first Glossybox for a while, so would the contents make me fall in love again?
What do you wear to meet a bunch of style-conscious bloggers?
It must be up there as one of the harder clothing dilemmas going!
Add to the mix that I’m not very body confident as I’m still carrying extra baby weight (okaaaay….its really just my weight at this point!) and I found it extra tough to pick an outfit for the East Mids Meet Up I went to on Saturday at Leicester cocktail bar Manhattan 34.
The answer I found was to turn to my fellow bloggers for inspiration. I’ve never really worn a jumpsuit before, but after seeing Shani wearing one on her blog and looking awesome I thought it would be perfect for this occasion and many others. Suddenly it seemed like something I really needed in my life!
What's the best thing about being a blogger? People often assume its the freebies and products sent for review, but actually? Its getting the chance to connect with other people that really care about the things you do. And when you get a good group of like-minded souls together, its magic.
The blogging 'community' (and I use that term lightly) is often maligned as being dreadfully bitchy and competitive, and while there is plenty of that going on, there's a lot more support, collaboration and encouragement than people might think.
I was lucky enough to experience some of that when I went along to the latest East Mids Meet Up over in Leicester. I haven't been to a meet up or any blog events for about a year, so I was a bit nervous.
Here's how the day went and my blog meet survival guide...
This month’s Birchbox turned out to be a Birchbag – perfect for summer!
As someone who has an obsession with collecting little zipped bags and pouches, I was over the moon with this month’s ‘bag’ – and what was inside.
A while back, I was signed up to a couple of different beauty trial boxes but I just got bored with seeing product repeats and I wasn’t really using the stuff, so I cancelled them.
However, I was tempted back to the Birchbox fold by last month’s collab with Millie Mackintosh and I’ve stuck with it to see what August has to offer.
The bag is a light grey scuba material with a brightly coloured zip and pull tab in either orange, neon yellow, pink or the aqua colour that I received. It’s a decent size without being bulky and super-useful as a make-up bag or to use for toiletries if you’re going away.
The bag is something I would quite happily have paid for, so I was really pleased to receive it as part of this month’s selection.
But what was inside?
For years now, I’ve been a massive fan of Oliver Bonas, a beautiful design-led boutique department store that sells homewares, fashion, accessories, stationary and lots of gorgeous gifty bits. Whenever I was down in London, it would always be top of the must-visit list.
In between, I occasionally shopped with them online, but its really one of those shops where I find it better to have the in-store browsing experience, as you stumble across so many little treasures.
‘Is this £7 cream nearly as good as a £292 equivalent?’. It’s those sort of headlines that make me want to go out and snatch a product off the shelves, so I was really keen to try the Lacura Caviar Illuminate range as soon as I saw it.
Lacura is a brand I don’t know all that well, but a lot of its products seem to garner amazing PR. Its sold out of Aldi stores, which seem to be taking over at the moment, and so I suspect we’ll be seeing more and more of it as well.
One opened near to me not so long ago, and this was one of the first things I wanted to get my hands on.
I’m all for ‘democratic skincare’. I don’t think great formulations should have to cost the earth, especially when you factor in the buying power of the mass-market brands and the profits they generate to pour back into research. In fact, my very favourite skincare product ever is from No7.
But for just £7, I did have my doubts about how good this could be. So I picked up a jar each of the Day Cream, Night Cream and 3 Minute Peel Mask to try. Here’s what I found…
