Once upon a time, we all started out in one job. And we then stayed in that one job until it was time to retire. But those days are long gone.

Joining one company at the age of sixteen and then retiring with a healthy pension at the age of sixty isn’t really the done thing. In some ways, that’s unfortunate, but in others, it’s a good thing.

Sure, working for a company that then gave you a good pension was smart, but what happens if you started out in a role or an industry that you’re really not all that keen on? Or maybe you were kind of pushed into one route when you really wanted to do something else? What could you do about it then? Well, not an awful lot.

These days, we all have more choice. WAY more choice. Because getting onto the right career path in the first place can take time. And sometimes, it may even be a good ten years into one career before you realize that it’s just not right for you. Because you change and companies change and what was once a great fit, might not be anymore.

Yet it’s easy to want to ignore that. When really, you need to be taking it in and then making sure that you do something about it.

So if you are thinking that you might like to make a career move, but you’re kind of ignoring it, let’s take a look at why it might be right for you.

1. You’re Unhappy

First of all, if you are unhappy at work, then this is a clear indicator that something is up. It won’t always be that you’re unhappy with WHAT you’re doing. Sometimes it’s about the environment. But, if you know that you’re just not happy with what you’re doing anymore, then you need to make sure that you consider what might make you happy instead.

2. You’re Bored

The next thing is that you might just be bored. And it’s a thing. It’s easy to become bored at work - for many reasons. Maybe you’re not being challenged or you don’t enjoy what you’re doing? Maybe you’ve realized that your work just isn’t fulfilling you and you want to do something else? Then act on it. Just make sure that you come up with a plan for how this is all going to work.

3. You Don’t Love What You Do

Another thing to think about is that if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, then maybe you need to make a change. Because life is too short to be in a job that you just don’t care about. If you want to, then start to work on your skills and experience so that you can move into doing something you love.

4.You Want More

Sometimes, it’s just the case that you want more. And that’s okay. In society, we’re taught that wanting more is selfish. But it’s not. If you’re not fulfilled in your career or you want to earn more or have more control, you can. You can go freelance or just start your own thing. But, it’s a good idea to do this on the side first, build it up, and then take things full time.

5. You Want To Build Something

It could be that you have entrepreneurial ambitions? If you know that you’d love to be your own boss, then why not start coming up with a business plan and see if you can’t get something off of the ground? If not, you might always wish you did.

6. You Want To Make A Difference

Or maybe you really want to make a difference in the world? Do you feel that you’re really not contributing anything in the role that you’re in? Do you want to help others or make the world a better places? You absolutely can - and you can do this through your work. So think about a career choice that will allow you to do exactly that.

7. It’s Time For A New Challenge

At the same time, it could be that you just feel ready for a new challenge. Maybe the time has come. And you know that you just need to move on and be faced with a new personal challenge? Then this is always going to be an indicator that you need to make a change. But, it could be that you should be looking for a promotion, and not necessarily moving careers, so just be aware of that.

8. You Want To Follow Your Dreams

Next up, it might be that you actually want to follow a dream that you’ve had for some time? And this is something truly spectacular to do. But, you may need to do a few things first. If you need equipment or to take a course, you could need to get a guarantor loan or start to save up. So make sure that you’re doing this first, and planning out a course of action, before you quit your job!

9. You Can’t Stop Thinking About Something

And if you know that you just cannot get one thing out of your mind, then you need to go for it. Always wanted to design clothes or race cars or anything else? If you know that your dream of doing so is just not going to go away, it’s a huge indicator that you just need to get started with it.

10. An Opportunity Comes Your Way

But then finally, it might be that, something just lands on your lap. And aren’t you a lucky soul if it does. Because opportunities don’t always come a knocking. Instead, you have to chase after them most of the time. So, if you get offered an opportunity of a lifetime, or a job offer comes your way - even if it’s out of the blue, why not consider it? If you’re interested and it sounds super cool, it could be a really great idea.

And that might be something that is just too good to pass up!
