Review: Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain

Wednesday 6 August 2014

Great new product launch from Revlon that I had to get on the blog as soon as possible - the Colorstay Moisture Stain.

As soon as I saw these, I wanted to get my hands on some. They struck me as a brilliant high-street dupe for YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain.

They’re the same concept – a hybrid of lipstick, gloss and stain, and also moisturising. Sounds like the ultimate lip product, right?

At 7.99 each (and currently with cheaper launch offers in Boots and Superdrug), these are obviously priced really well, and the colours are absolutely gorgeous.

The range includes:
Stockholm Chic (a dark reddish brown)
LA Exclusive (a warm mid-pink)
Rio Rush (a pinkish coral)
Milan Moment (a rusty orange)
Cannes Crush (coral)
India Intrigue (dark pink)
London Posh (golden peach)
Barcelona Nights (pinkish red)
Miami Fever (coral/red)
New Your Scene (purpley-red)
Shanghai Sizzle (bright red)
Parisian Passion (plum)

I did want to buy them all, but I restrained myself for the moment and just picked up ‘Shanghai Sizzle’ and ‘London Posh’ for now, although I was also eyeing up ‘Miami Heat’ quite closely.

These lip products have so many good points. As well as that gorgeous colour range, they really pay off pigment-wise. If you like bright colours and the look of a lipstick, you’ll adore these.

They have a lovely gel-like texture when they go on that feels very comfortable to wear, and gives an opaque, jelly-like feel to the colour without losing any punch of pigment.

They are buildable as well, so one coat is a little sheerer than two, particularly with the lighter shades.

The finish is shiny, without being overly glossy – sort of a ‘satin’ finish rather than full-on wet look, but I think its more flattering than super-shiny, and certainly less high-maintenance.

Here’s how one swatch looked – nice and dense:

‘London Posh’ is a really pretty peach shade, shot through with a very fine gold shimmer. It would look gorgeous with smoky eyes or brightly coloured ones.

‘Shanghai Sizzle’ is a bright, warm-toned red that would look great with a tan - the colour is so punchy. I love them.

These contain Vitamin E and Aloe for an extra-moisturising hit, so chapped lips can rejoice! When I put the shades on for these photos and wiped them off afterwards, I noticed that they left a really softened feel behind, like I’d put a balm on.

You have to work them into the lips a little while the gel does it magic, but once they’re on, they have great staying power – mine lasted through dinner as well!

The doe-foot applicator makes them easy to apply on the run. I have to say I’m a big fan of the packaging – the chunky, squared off tube with the colour showing through looks quite premium. It is plastic, but a heavy kind.

Because they’re squared off, these are easy to stack in a drawer, and I really like the whole look and feel of them.

I can see these getting a whole lot of wear and I’m already plotting what other shades to add to my collection. They’re great value, innovative lip products that give fantastic coverage in a host of juicy colours – go get some! I think you’ll love them.
