What's your favourite brand of drugstore makeup?
There are so many gems out there at the moment it's kind of hard to choose. But one brand I love and always seem to come back to is Maybelline.
They have a knack for innovation and launching new products that just seem to tap into the mood of the moment, and it's all great value.
I found myself doing a mini Maybelline haul the other day and picked up some of their newest products.
Here's what I thought of them and why you might need them in your life...
Too Faced have definitely emerged to become my favourite make-up brand of the moment. Not only have they knocked it of the park with their new foundation launch Born This Way, but they also make my holy grail mascara, Better Than Sex (if you're interested, I did a comparison post on that with a high-street dupe here).
So the next item on my list of products to investigate was their legendary Chocolate Box eyeshadow palette. After all, what woman could resist a palette of shadows in shimmer and matte neutrals, dressed up in this cute chocolate bar tin that also smells of chocolate?
But would the shadows live up to the insanely high expectations I had after trialling their other products?
Foundations are a bit like buses. None for ages, then loads seem to come out at once that you want to try. A couple of weeks after finding my new holy grail foundation (which you can read about here), there was a new launch at the other end of the market that caught my eye.
I haven't actually used a L'Oreal foundation for a while, despite religiously using them during my teenage years. They just don't seem to have launched anything that interesting for a while, but their new launch, True Match Genius, looked well worth a try.
I haven't been in the beauty subscription box game for quite a few months now. After signing up with Birchbox, and then Glossybox for a couple of years, I'd begun to feel a bit disillusioned.
It seemed like I kept seeing the same few products come round, and nothing was really wowing me.
The love had gone out of it. My drawers were filling up with unused samples. I didn't really discover anything life changing that became a must-have. So I cancelled all my subs a while back.
However, I was tempted back for this Birchbox birthday edition after receiving a code to get a half price box. Would the contents change my opinion on sub boxes?
Sometimes, just sometimes, a product comes along that is oh-so-perfect, and special, and GENIUS that it makes the sun seem to shine brighter, the birds sing louder and reminds me just why I'm so obsessed with make-up in the first place.
So I think you can already tell that my review of Too Faced Born This Way foundation is going to be pretty positive! But honestly? This stuff is holy grail on a whole new level.
If airbrushed, miraculously natural-looking coverage is your thing, you are going to want to buy this. Right now. If not, then I think you might be in the wrong place here to start with.
As you might know by now, I have a *slight* addiction to false lashes. I just love the wide-eyed appearance and amped up flutter they give, and I'm permanently on a quest to get dense, flirty Disney Princess style lashes.
Although I have tried permanent lash extensions before, I never get on with them. They seem to irritate my eyes and I hate not being able to get my face wet. As much as I love my make-up, I also love that clean feeling at the end of the day when its all off.
So my preference is to use strip lashes, and thankfully these have come a looooonnngg way since the bad old days when they were all plasticky and nylon looking.
My favourites are always Eylure because they're great quality, affordable and have a huge selection of styles, so whenever they launch anything new I'm always interested.
Hello beauties
Isn't it great when you find a dupe for an expensive product? There are plenty of sites out there dedicated to finding and testing cheaper alternatives for big-name products, which shows we all have a fascination with value.
Personally, I absolutely love a bargain as long as it performs. Equally, I don't mind spending more on a product that I know delivers, either. What I'm looking for is a great performance for the price point.
My holy grail mascara is Too Faced Better Than Sex. It's £19.00, which I think its worth, but there are times when you don't want or need to spend that amount. I love the fullness, volume and feathery soft finish it gives to my lashes, but could there be a drugstore dupe that would deliver identical results?
Have you heard about Glo & Ray? They're a hot new British cosmetic brand focused on bright colour, individual looks and professional beauty that will set hearts a-flutter for lovers of brands such as Illamasqua and Nars.
I'd seen a lot of buzz about them online, so I was delighted to get my hands on some of their most sought-after products to review - the Nebulae foundation, La Amo Creamy Matte lipstick and Wonderland gloss.
First impressions are great. All the products come in sleek black packaging that will look at home in any serious collection. But did they perform?
I did it! After several month of Pinterest stalking bob hairstyles and coveting shorter locks, I went for the chop the other day!
I’ve had long hair for years, and it had become a bit of a safety blanket if I’m honest. It really felt time for a change, but of course I was quite nervous about it. But life is changing a lot at the moment and I wanted my hair to keep pace. Plus, my ends were fried, dried out and just felt gross. It was beginning to irritate me having all that dead hair hanging around my face.
The ‘lob’ or long, textured bob has definitely been the standout style over the past few years. Suddenly, short hair looked much cooler than WAG style long, bouncing curls. But still I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
Lashes are one of those things that can seriously alter my mood. If my lash game feels on point, I generally feel better about life! From a subtle enhancement to really adding the wow factor to a special look, I can't imagine going without my falsies for a special occasion.
BUT.....there are a lot of bad lashes out there. A lot of crimes committed against the strip lash that are easily avoidable - nylon looking lashes, crooked lash bands, bad glue work... the list is endless, and I think it puts a lot of people off even trying.
There are several things you can do to make false lashes a breeze (and if you're looking for tips, check out my Top Tips for a Flawless Flutter here).
Like most beauty addicts, I’m a massive fan of Charlotte Tilbury makeup.
The beautiful formulations, the gorgeous packaging – and the lady herself, who I would die to have my makeup done by!
But despite being a big fan, and lingering over her counter every time I paid a visit to Selfridges, I didn’t actually own much from the range at all.
As part of my Bump to Baby Bucket list, I’d resolved to treat myself to some real wish-list products before the baby comes, while I still have a disposable income, so I decided to pick up a couple of the lipstick shades, which we’ll look at here.
Never breaking a promise to yourself is something I feel strongly about, so when I said at the start of the year that I was going to get more Nars in my life, I meant it! I never joke when it comes to make-up…
The Dual Intensity palette is a flagship product of theirs and a great introduction to what Nars are all about as a brand. After falling in love with their lip crayons, I’m now being lured in by the eye shades. First of all there was the Narsissist Smoky Eye Kit (read my review of that here), and then this thing of beauty.
The Dual Intensity palette contains eight shades of out of this world colour, that can be used wet or dry (hence the ‘Dual’ in the title) to create an array of effects.
